Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner Review

Posted by anotherbeautyblogger on June 30, 2010

I am a BzzAgent. For those of you who are unaware of BzzAgent it is a company that promotes word of mouth campaigns through everyday people like you and me. If you are selected to be part of a given BzzAgent campaign, you’re usually sent a product to test out as well as a few coupons or samples to pass out to others to get the word out there about a new product.

Anyhoo, I was recently chosen to participate in the BzzAgent Reinvented Dove Hair Care campaign. You may have seen some Dove TV commercials lately that talk about how they are re-inventing some of their products to make them better than they previously were. I was sent a bottle of re-invented Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner to review.

The information included with the Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner emphasizes that this is a daily conditioner that has the benefits of a deep nourishment treatment. Using Dove’s most advanced technology ever, it is designed to “penetrate deep inside to help repair hair internally and leave it more beautiful on the outside.” Dove promises that after just one use of the Daily Treatment Conditioner you will see instant smoothness and tackle the appearance of damage that results from things like styling, coloring, and blow-drying.

There are three levels of re-invented Dove Damage Therapy products. Damage Level One is for those who have noticed “slightly dry, dull or limp locks.” Damage Level Two is for those who have hair that feels “dry, frizzy, or rough at the ends.” Damage Level Three is for those who are “looking for intense repair to correct very dry, brittle and breaking strands.” Each of these levels has a number of different shampoos and conditioners designed to tackle different problems (e.g. Frizz Control, Volume Boost, Daily Moisture, Color Repair, etc.). The Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner I was sent to test out is from the Damage Level Three collection.

I have to admit that I’m a little confused as to how I am supposed to use this product. Yes, I know wash hair, put conditioner on, rinse off, but that’s not what I’m talking about. It is not paired up with a shampoo from the Dove line. Neither of the Daily Treatment Conditioners (there are two varieties) have a shampoo counterpart. I’m guessing that means that this conditioner was formulated to work with any shampoo, but I’m not totally sure. I know that most hair care companies state that their products are formulated to complement each other and thus they have a process for which products should be used together. Since I am not generally a user of Dove hair care products, I did not use the Dove Daily Treatment Conditioner with Dove shampoo. I used John Frieda Root Awakenings shampoo.

So what did I think of the reinvented Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner? I have to admit, I liked it. I didn’t love it, but I liked it. The first thing I noticed when I used the conditioner was the scent. There is a very strong scent that emits from the bottle and the conditioner. I can’t really describe the scent. It’s not a bad scent. It doesn’t smell like flowers or fruit. It smells like conditioner. Although the scent of the conditioner is strong straight from the bottle, the scent loses its power after it is used and then washed off your hair.

When you hear “treatment” with regards to a hair product, you usually think of a thick product that you will slather all over your hair. Although this Daily Treatment Conditioner is thicker than your average everyday conditioner, it is not as thick as most treatments. This is actually somewhat of a good thing because it doesn’t require you to have to over exert yourself trying to squeeze a thick, heavy conditioner out of a squeeze bottle. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve used products like that in the past and the no patience side of me tends to get the better of me which then results in me ripping the cap off of the bottle and wasting a lot of product. I’m happy to say that will not happen with Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner.

When I put the Daily Treatment Conditioner on my hair, it had a nice feel to it. It felt like it was really grabbing onto my hair. I did use more than the recommended quarter-sized portion since I have very thick hair. I waited 1 minute per the directions on the bottle and then washed it off. I try to not use a blow dryer on my hair since I usually use a flat iron or big barrel curling iron to straighten my hair. As such, I tend to wash my hair at night so that I wake up with dry hair in the morning. So I went to bed with visions of what my hair would look like in the morning after using this new Dove product dancing in my head.

When I woke up, I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw and felt. My hair incredibly soft, light, and…um…airy, for lack of a better word. My hair was noticeably smoother in that it wasn’t as frizzy as it can be, but it was NOT completely frizz-free. After straightening it, my hair looked shiny and felt soft so I was happy. But I also have to note that this was the first time I was using this product so I’m sure that the light feeling and less frizzy look was also a result of shaking my hair up with a new product…you know what I mean? When I used the Dove Daily Treatment Conditioner again my hair wasn’t horrible, but it was almost as if my hair had built up a tolerance to it. Which again is a reason that I’m a big believer in changing up your hair care routine.

I don’t think this Dove Daily Treatment Conditioner could ever replace a deep conditioning treatment.  While it is a good everyday conditioner, it is just not the same as a monthly deep conditioning treatment.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by Dove Intensive Repair Daily Treatment Conditioner. I’m not about to make it my everyday conditioner because I’m happy with what I’m already using, but I wouldn’t be against using it. It did a great job of making my hair feel soft and smooth and I think that’s what you’re usually looking for in a conditioner. If you are a user of drugstore brand shampoos/conditioners and have been looking for something that is more of a treatment product, I would recommend giving Daily Treatment Conditioner a try.
