Top Five Thursdays – Top Five Longwear Lip Color / Lip Stains

Posted by anotherbeautyblogger on June 24, 2010

Happy Thursday!  Just one more day until the weekend.  Thursdays at are Top Five Thursdays.  Every week I’m going to put up a top five list of my favorite beauty products, cosmetics lines, skin care products, eye shadow colors…you get the picture.  These lists are based on my own humble opinion based on my experiences trying tons and tons of beauty products over the years.  So here we go!  I present my Top Five Longwear Lip Color / Lip Stains.

1.  MAC Pro Longwear Lip Colour – This has been my go-to longwear lip color for as long as I can remember.  As with every MAC product, it’s packed full of pigment and has tremendous staying power.  I have never had to reapply the lip color when I’ve used this product.   The lip colour comes with a clear gloss on the other end of the stick.  Slick it on to give your lips some shine and to add some moisture.  The lip colour itself is a little drying, so keep either the clear gloss or some sort of lip balm handy.  This also comes in a lustre version (instead of the clear gloss at the opposite end of the stick, a sparkly lustre gloss has taken its place).  MAC Pro Longwear Lip Colour is available in a wide range of colors so there is something for every skin tone.  Retail Price:  $21.  Added Bonus:  You can find these at The Cosmetic Company Store at many outlet malls across the country at a great price (including Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora for my Chicago girls).

2.  Pixi Lip Blush – This is the only magic marker-esque lip stain on my list.  It is the only one I have tried that can compete with liquid colors.  Applied it has such a light and airy feeling.  It lasts all day.  No need for a touch up, although some Chapstick may be needed.  The only downside is that Pixi Lip Blush is only available in four colors, but the range of colors is wide enough that the colors are not similar to each other and everyone should be able to find one shade that they enjoy.  Retail Price:  $18.  Added Bonus:  It’s available at Target!  Almost everyone has a Target near them.

3.  LORAC Co-Stars – Remember years ago when everyone was obsessed with those adorable little bottles of LORAC lip polishes?  I was so on that bandwagon.  Good thing because being on that bandwagon lead me to play around with other LORAC products including Co-Stars.  Like the MAC Pro Longwear Lip Colour, this is a double-ended lip stain with the lip color on one end and a shiney top coat on the other.  The color is long-lasting and looks natural.  Like the Pixi Lip Blush, the downside is that this product is only available in five shades.  Retail Price:  $20.  Added Bonus: I can’t think of one…sorry.

4.  Laura Geller Lip Stay – I don’t want to sound repetitive, but the Laura Geller Lip Stay is very similar to the Mac Pro Longwear and LORAC Co-Stars.  Double-ended lip color with a shine top coat on one end.  Long-lasting with nice neutral colors.  Lip Stay is available in six colors, but they are all pretty neutral colors.  If you’re looking for a bright bold color with some pop you’ll have to look elsewhere.  Retail Price: $13 – $14.50 (depending on where you buy it).  Added Bonus:  It’s one of the cheaper non-drugstore brand longwear lip colors out there.

5.  Tarte Rise & Shine Plumping Lip Stain – Tarte is well known for their fabulous Cheek Stains, but a lot of their other products are often overlooked.  I think the Rise & Shine Plumping Lip Stain is one of those overlooked products because when I’ve mentioned it to others no one has ever known what I was talking about.  Here we have another double ended product.  But here’s what makes this duo unique.  Unlike the other double ended products featured in this post, this one does not have your run of the mill clear shiny top coat gloss.  No siree, this one has a complimenting tinted lip gloss on the opposite end of the lip color.  Available in six fun shades, including both bright, bold colors and neutral, natural colors.  Retail Price:  $21.  Added Bonus:  Obviously the matching tinted lip gloss!

A couple of tips on using longwear lip colors / lip stains.  First, lip stains tend to show all of the flaws that your lips may have.  I do not recommend using lip stains on dry or flakey lips because it will only accentuate those issues.  Second, lip stains are designed to sink into your lips.  As a result, bleeding outside of the lip line can occur.  My advice is to pay attention when you’re applying the lip stain and don’t just slather it on like you might with a normal lipgloss.  Lipliners also help.  Third, always let the lip color dry completely before putting a top coat on it.  If you don’t, it may change the texture of the lip stain.  Lastly, don’t smack your lips together after you apply the lip color.  Just put it on and let it be.  No smacking, no blotting, just let it dry.

So there you have it, my top five longwear lip color / lip stains at the moment.  What do you think?  Did I leave out your favorite longwear lip color / lip stain?  Do you hate one of my top fives?  Got an idea for the next Top Five Thursday?  Leave a comment and let me know!
