Budget Beauty Monday – Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm Review

Posted by anotherbeautyblogger on January 17, 2011

It’s Monday…time for Budget Beauty Monday!!! Let’s face it. After the weekend we usually end up feeling like we ate too much, drank too much, spent too much, and didn’t do enough around the house. So I figure Monday on should feature budget beauty products that won’t break the bank so you won’t feel bad about wanting to run out and get them.

Neutrogena has recently released a couple of new products.  Walgreens had a buy one, get one 50% off sale for Neutrogena this past week so I picked up some of the new items.  The one I was most excited to try out was the new Revitalizing Lip Balm.

The Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm is a sheer tint with SPF 20 that promises “softer, rosier healthier looking lips, even after you take it off!”  It also claims that “in just one week, it helps improve lips’ texture and restores the look of rosiness, so lips look naturally beautiful even after you take it off.”  All of this is made possible thanks to Neutrogena’s exclusive ion2complex.  It is available in 6 shades:  Sheer Shimmer, Healthy Blush, Sunny Berry, Petal Glow, Soft Caramel, and Fresh Fig (you can see a color chart on Neutrogena’s website).

I picked up Petal Glow.  It looked like it fell into the middle of the color range for the shades available.  It is a very sheer plumy-pink.  So what did I think?

I love this Revitalizing Lip Balm!  It is sheer, but gives you just the right amount of color.  You can see from the swatch photo what I’m talking about.  I would classify this as a lip enhancer since you are essentially left with the “your lips but better” look.  It also delivers the perfect amount of shine.  My lips did look revitalized after I put this lip balm on.

There is a pleasant melon scent/taste to this balm.  It doesn’t last very long.  And I love that this balm has SPF 20.  It amazes me that there are still a number of lip products, especially lip balms, out there that don’t have a drop of SPF in them.

I will be using this new Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm all year long, but I think it will be especially perfect for the Spring and Summer when I’m looking for a lighter, more natural looking look.  It will also be great for those days in the pool.

Oh, I almost forgot about this.  The one thing I don’t like about this product is it’s shape.  It has an oval shape unlike the traditional round shape.  I have no idea why Neutrogena chose this shape or if there is a purpose for it.  I think a round lip balm fits lips better than an oval one.  This isn’t a big deal, but just thought I would mention it.

Petal Glow 40 Swatch

Overall, I really liked this product.  The lip balm offered a nice sheer tint to my lips with just the right amount of shine.  It also felt like it was moisturizing my lips.  I’ve been using this product for about a week, but I can’t say that I’ve noticed a change in texture or rosiness.  However, I don’t think my lips were in bad shape to begin with.  I would be curious to see if you get results if you start with dry or chapped lips.

The retail value for the Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm is $7.99.  It’s a little pricey for a lip balm, but Neutrogena is often on sale at Walgreens and CVS so pick it up then.  I also used a $1 coupon to save a little bit more.  It’s currently available at drugstores, grocery stores, and big box stores that sell Neutrogena.  At Walgreens, I found it on a special display at the front of the cosmetics section.  For more information you can check out

Again, sorry about the crappy pictures!

Have you seen any of the new Neutrogena products at your drugstores?  Have you tried the Neutrogena Revitalizing Lip Balm?  Are you planning on giving it a try?

Budget Beauty Monday – Carmex Lime Twist

Posted by anotherbeautyblogger on December 27, 2010

It’s Monday…time for Budget Beauty Monday!!! Let’s face it. After the weekend we usually end up feeling like we ate too much, drank too much, spent too much, and didn’t do enough around the house. So I figure Monday on should feature budget beauty products that won’t break the bank so you won’t feel bad about wanting to run out and get them.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have at least 10 different tubes of lip balm scattered about your purse, desk, car, night stand, etc.  Especially during the cold, windy Chicago winters, lip balm is an absolute beauty staple for me.  A few weeks ago I picked up the limited edition Carmex Lime Twist lip balm while I was at Walgreens.  Truthfully, I’m not a huge fan of the original Carmex.  Don’t get me wrong, it works and is very moisturizing, but I can’t get past that Carmex taste.  But when I saw that Carmex was releasing 2 new limited edition flavors (Vanilla is the other one), I figured I would give it a try.

Just like the original Carmex, Carmex Lime Twist promises to soothe, heal, and protect.  It also comes with a dose of SPF 15 for even more protection.  So what did I think?

It’s no surprise that Carmex Lime Twist was just as effective on my lips as the original Carmex is.  It definitely kept my lips hydrated and soothed my dry lips.  I put it on just before I went out to shovel my driveway and my lips weren’t bothered by the cold and wind at all.  It also gave me that Carmex tingle on my lips.  I personally love the tingle from medicated balms, plumping lip glosses, etc.  That’s the good.

And then there’s the bad…at least for me.  While there is a taste of lime in the Carmex Lime Twist, I still got a strong taste of that original Carmex flavor.  Again, that’s a bit of a negative for me, but I know that there are tons and tons of Carmex fans out there that love that flavor.  If you fall into that group, this won’t be a problem for you.

Overall, I liked the Carmex Lime Twist and would use it again.  Since it does such a great job at soothing, healing, and protecting, I’m willing to overlook the Carmex flavor.  Carmex fans are definitely going to want to pick this as well as the Vanilla Carmex up.

Both the Carmex Lime Twist and Carmex Vanilla are limited edition flavors that are available exclusively at Walgreens.  I found mine on the beauty counter, not by the normal lip balm section in the pharmacy.

Are you a Carmex girl/guy?  Have you tried either the Lime Twist or Vanilla limited edition flavors?  What did you think?

Budget Beauty Monday – Chapstick

Posted by anotherbeautyblogger on June 21, 2010

It’s Monday…time for Budget Beauty Monday!!!  Let’s face it.  After the weekend we usually end up feeling like we ate too much, drank too much, spent too much, and didn’t do enough around the house.  So I figure Monday on should feature budget beauty products that won’t break the bank so you won’t feel bad about wanting to run out and get them.

For most of my life I was a total Blistex girl.  I would literally have 10 tubs of Blistex Medex at a time…one in my purse, one in my car, one in my schoolbag, one in my desk at home, one in my desk at work, one in my bathroom, one in my nightstand, one in my Sweeties car…you get the picture.  But that all changed once Chapstick started adding some new life to its brand.

I was never a fan of the classic Chapstick.  It was always pretty boring and just tasted really waxy to me.  Cherry Chapstick was okay but I still preferred Blistex.  Then Chapstick started to come out with products like True Shimmer, 100% Naturals, and Fresh Effects and I jumped on the Chapstick bandwagon.

My favorites are the Fresh Effects Chapsticks which come in Refreshing Mandarin and Invigorating Green Tea Mint.  They are so invigorating and truly do make your lips feel refreshed.  Both varities offer a moisturizing cooling sensation when applied to your lips.  They are absolutely perfect for summer.  Neither varities have any sort of pigment to them so they are great for layering with your favorite lipgloss.  I went through a severe case of chapped lips this winter and these Fresh Effects Chapsticks were my saving grace.

I also love the True Shimmers.  Unlike the Fresh Effects, the True Shimmers do have subtle hints of color.  Available in Botanical Berry, Tropical, Peppermint Rush, and Blended Fruit Sherbert, they are also flavored.  Each True Shimmer is also packed with shimmer (I know, unbelievable right?).  If you look at the balms themselves they are absolutely packed with shimmer, but the beauty of this product is that it doesn’t appear that way on your lips.  There is just a subtle hint of shimmer with no gritty glitter feeling.  Peppermint Rush is my favorite because it combines the shimmer of True Shimmers with the cooling effect of Fresh Effects.

Lipstains seem to be taking the beauty market by storm lately.  The problem that I have, and I’m sure most of you have as well, is that while lipstains are great at giving me long-lasting color, they don’t do much in the moisture department.  I hate the drying feeling that lipstains leave on your lips.  While some lipstains come with some sort of moisturizing balm or gloss, many do not.  Then there’s always the problem of using up the balm/gloss before the lipstain.  These Chapstick products are the perfect solution.  The color of the lipstain is unchanged, but a quick coat of Chapstick makes my lips look lush and hydrated.

At under $3 each, the entire line of Chapstick products is an absolute steal.  This is one those products that you can afford to have stashed all over the house, car, work, etc.  Not to mention that you can pick up one of each flavor or type and not break the bank.

Are you hooked on the newer Chapstick lines?  Can’t stand them?  Leave a comment and let everyone know what you think!
